The journey starts in Taplejung in the northeast of Nepal and ends in Ghunsa in the south as it winds through five passes. Along the way, you can observe stunning views of Mount Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks, lush rhododendron forests, and some of the most remote villages in Nepal. You will also have a chance to spot rare species, including red pandas, snow leopards, and musk deer, with other different flora and faunas.
When planning your Kanchenjunga North-to-South Trek, it’s important to know that many of the villages in the region are remote. This means there may be little to minimal hotel and accommodation options available.
It’s also worth mentioning that while some lodges can be found during the trek, these are often basic facilities with limited amenities. However, if you’re looking for a more comfortable stay during your trek, there are a few alternatives to consider.
Most villages in the region offer teahouses, which are a combination of a hotel and a cafe. These unique establishments offer a combination of hotel-style accommodations and cafe-style dining, making them the perfect place to rest and refuel during your journey.
Tea houses typically include shared dormitory-style rooms with shared washrooms and common areas. Guests can purchase food and drink at the cafe and enjoy it in the communal dining area or in their own room. In addition to providing a comfortable place to rest, tea houses also offer a great opportunity to meet other travelers and learn about the local culture.
Another option is homestays, which provide a more relaxed and less structured environment. Homestays can range from basic to luxurious and can be found with a quick online search or through local tour operators. We can also arrange you local guesthouses and hotels if you prefer a more traditional accommodation option.
Whichever type of accommodation you choose, we will make sure that you are comfortable and have everything you need for a great trekking experience.
For 17 days, trekkers will be enjoying the best meals that the Kanchenjunga North and South Trek has to offer. One of the most important aspects of this trek is the meals and snacks along the way. You can expect to be served some of the fresh and most delicious cuisine in the region, made with local ingredients and cooked in traditional methods.
The meals cover breakfast, lunch, and dinner on most days of the trek and include a variety of international staples as well as local specialties. The meals served during the trek will be simple but nourishing and filling. The main focus will be on local cuisine, so you can expect to enjoy some delicious Nepalese dishes while you’re trekking. Breakfast and dinner will be served at the teahouses where we stay overnight, and we’ll also stop for lunch along the way.
All meals are included in the cost of the trek, so you don’t need to worry about packing or cooking food. Snacks and drinks will also be available throughout the day to keep you fueled for the hike. If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your needs.

Trekking to Kanchenjunga North and South is a logistical challenge that requires careful planning and preparation. Here are some logistical factors that you should consider:
The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek is a high-altitude trek, so it’s important to plan your visit during the best season to ensure a safe and comfortable trekking experience. The two best seasons for this trek are Spring (March – May) and Autumn (Sep-Nov).
Spring season is considered the best time to trek in Kanchenjunga. During this season, the weather is mild, the skies are clear, and the trails are dry, making it ideal for trekking. The blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers add a splash of color to the landscape, making it a photographer’s paradise.
Autumn season is another great time to trek in Kanchenjunga. During this season, the weather is dry, and the skies are clear, offering stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The temperature during the day ranges from 15°C to 20°C and can drop to -5°C at night.
Winter season is also an option for trekking in Kanchenjunga, but it’s not recommended for novice trekkers or those who are not used to extreme weather conditions. The temperature during the day ranges from 5°C to 10°C and can drop to -10°C at night. However, if you are a seasoned trekker and are properly equipped, you can enjoy the stunning snow-capped landscapes and the unique winter trekking experience.
Monsoon season is not recommended for trekking in Kanchenjunga. During this season, the trails are slippery, and the risk of landslides and avalanches is high. The heavy rainfalls make it difficult to trek in the region, and the visibility is poor due to cloud cover. Therefore, it’s best to avoid trekking in Kanchenjunga during this season.
To summarize, the best time to trek in Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is during Spring and Autumn seasons when the weather is mild and the trails are dry. However, if you are properly equipped, you can also enjoy trekking in the Winter season. Monsoon season should be avoided due to the high risk of landslides and poor visibility. So, plan your trekking adventure carefully and make the most of your time in this stunning Himalayan landscape.
If you’re a lover of adventure, breathtaking scenery, and an adrenaline rush like no other, then Kanchenjunga Trek is the perfect destination for you. But, before packing your backpack and setting off on the adventure of a lifetime, it’s crucial that you are aware of the permits required for trekking in the Kanchenjunga region.
Trekking in Kanchenjunga is an experience like no other; however, having proper permits beforehand can make or break your trip. In this section, we’ll talk about the information you need to know about getting your permits for trekking in Kanchenjunga.
So read on and discover everything you need to know!
Here are the costs of the required permits in the Kanchenjunga region.
Known for its spectacular scenery, remote villages, and mountaineering opportunities, the Kanchenjunga Region is a popular trekking destination. But the region is also home to four village development committees (VDCs) that are designated as restricted areas by the government of Nepal. The four VDCs, Yamphuding, Lelep, Paping, and Olangchung Gola, all in the wards of Taplejung district, have been designated as restricted areas for the protection of natural resources and the control of illegal human activities.
Therefore, all visitors to the Kanchenjunga Region must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) before they can enter the region. As the region is located close to the Indian and Tibetan border, the restricted status of the area helps protect against illegal activities, preserve the local flora and fauna, and promote tourism.
The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit not only serves as a means of accessing the region but also as an additional layer of security. It requires visitors to follow a set of guidelines during their stay, such as restrictions on activities and time spent in the area. This serves as a reminder that visitors are responsible for their actions and should respect the local communities and environment.
The Kanchenjunga North to South Trek can take anywhere from 18-25 days. Of course, the duration will vary depending on several factors, like your personal fitness level and the trail’s conditions. We suggest giving yourself at least a month before the trek and packing accordingly.
