We will start our first day of the Kanchenjunga South to North Base Camp Trek with an early morning breakfast at our hotel in Kathmandu. After morning breakfast, we will begin our journey from Kathmandu to Biratnagar by either taking a bus or a 40-minute flight. Biratnagar is a city located in the south-eastern part of Nepal.
Once we arrive in Biratnagar, we will start our trek to Thumbeding, which will take us around 6-7 hours to complete. We will follow the trail that leads through small villages, dense forests, and terraced fields. Along the way, we will have a chance to witness the beautiful rural lifestyle of Nepal and interact with locals. We will also enjoy the stunning views of the mountains and rivers that we come across during the trek.
Thumbeding is a small village where we will spend the night before continuing our trek. After a morning breakfast in Khebang, we will start our trek to Yamphudin (2,080 m). This will be the first day of our actual trekking journey towards Kanchenjunga Base Camp. The trek will take us around 6-7 hours to complete.
Our trail will gradually ascend, and we will be walking on narrow paths, crossing suspension bridges over roaring rivers and streams. As we leave Khebang, we will be surrounded by beautiful landscapes, lush green forests, and cascading waterfalls.
The village is surrounded by dense forests, providing us with a wonderful view of the natural environment. We will spend the night in Yamphudin before continuing our journey towards the Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
On the fourth day of our Kanchenjunga trek, we’ll set out from Yamphudin towards Tortong, which is located at an altitude of 2,995 meters. The trek will take us through a scenic trail, with numerous small villages and settlements dotting the landscape. We’ll cross the Amji Khola river and pass through charming villages like Omsa, Dhumsa, and Chittre, before finally reaching Tortong.
The trek will take around 6-7 hours, and we’ll take our time to soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.Tortong is a peaceful village, surrounded by lush forests and stunning mountain peaks. We’ll spend the night in Tortong, enjoying the serenity and tranquility of the village, and preparing for the next day’s trek towards the Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
Today marks Day 5 of our trek, and our destination is the beautiful village of Cheram (3,870 m). We will be trekking from Tortong and it should take us around 6-7 hours to reach our destination.
The trek is going to be full of adventure, as we will be passing through Andi Pher, gaining an impressive 1000m of altitude in the process. The view here is absolutely stunning, as lush green meadows and towering snow-capped peaks surround us.
We will be crossing small bridges and walking right through the heart of the valley. Keep your eyes peeled for flora and fauna, and be sure to take lots of photos! After a day of trekking, we’ll be rewarded with the breath-taking view of Cheram. As the sun sets, we can lay our mats and get ready for a good night’s rest.
After several days of trekking, it’s time to give our bodies a much-needed rest and acclimate to the high altitudes. Acclimation is essential for adjusting to the climate in higher altitudes. It helps our bodies get used to the change in air pressure and oxygen levels, which can make us feel dizzy or light-headed. Acclimation is also important to prevent Altitude Sickness, which can cause severe symptoms like headaches, nausea and difficulty breathing.
The best way to acclimate is to take a rest day and allow our bodies the chance to adjust. So today, we’ll be taking the day off and exploring the nearby village of Cheram.
Today marks the seventh day of our amazing trek from Cheram to Ramchaur (4,580 m) and we’re more than ready to get going. After a restful two-night stay in Cheram, we’ll be embarking on a five to six-hour trek to Ramchaur.
We’ll begin our journey trekking alongside the Simbuwa Khola, passing the village of Lapsang along the way. This picturesque village is a must-stop on our journey and offers stunning views of the majestic Himalayan Mountains. We’ll take the time to take in the sights and sounds of the village, before continuing along our route.
As we journey further, we’ll pass through dense rhododendron and pine forests which are abundant with wildlife. We’ll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for a glimpse of rare birds and animals as we pass through these beautiful forests.
After a five- to six-hour trek, we’ll arrive in Ramchaur, a picturesque mountain village that provides spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and local hospitality. We’ll make sure to take in the stunning views before resting for the night in this quaint village.
We will begin our trek from Ramchaur and ascend gradually toward Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. The trek is approximately 6-7 hours long, and requires moderate physical fitness.
As we reach Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, we will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the mountain and its surroundings. Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world, and it stands at 8,586 meters (28,169 feet). It is considered sacred by locals and a popular destination for mountaineers and trekkers.
After spending some time at the base camp, we will start our descent back to Cheram. The trek back will take around 3-4 hours, and we will follow the same trail that we took earlier in the day. Upon reaching Cheram, we will have dinner and spend the night at a local Tea house.
Following yesterday’s long and exhausting trek, we are ready to proceed onwards to Ghunsa via Selele La pass today.
In the morning, we trek from Cheram to Selele La Pass. The trek takes us through beautiful mountain meadows as we pass Selele Khola and Tanbharma Danda, which mark the highest point of the trek today, at 5,455 m. From the top, there is an incredible view of the Himalayas.
The trail then starts to descend, leading us through a variety of terrain – from lush green meadows to rocky paths. There is a lot of natural beauty along the way, and a lot of local wildlife. The view is worth it despite the demanding terrain.
Finally, we reach Ghunsa, a small village situated in a picturesque valley, following several hours of hiking. We’ll stay overnight here.
We are acclimatizing to the cold temperatures and elevation changes of the Himalayas today after a long day of hiking through the mountains yesterday.
On this day of rest, we’ll have the opportunity to explore the nearby area and take in the breathtaking views. We can take a short walk around the town, visit local shops for souvenirs, or take a few steps up the trail to get a better view of the mountain range. This is also the perfect opportunity to let our bodies rest after spending so much time on the trail.
At Ghunsa, we’ll also be able to recharge both physically and mentally. With our minds energized and bodies rested, we’ll be ready to tackle the next challenge on our journey. It’s important to give ourselves this time to acclimatize before continuing our trek.
Our most challenging trek begins today in Ghunsa, traversing the forested slopes of the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola, passing several Mani walls and Chortens, as well as scree slopes and glacial moraines. A forested path will lead us up the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola today as we leave Ghunsa.
We will be trekking for around 5 to 6 hours until we reach our destination, the Tibetan settlement of Khangpachen (4,050 m). Here, we will be able to take a break and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mountains. Once we reach Khangpachen, we will rest and spend the night at a Tea house.
Today we will continue our trek from Khangpachen to Lhonak. The journey is expected to take 4-5 hours.
The trail leading to Lhonak passes through a desolate wilderness, dotted with icy glaciers, with no villages or settlements nearby.
We will make our way slowly, as the terrain is composed of moraine debris, making the footing slippery and treacherous. We will eventually reach the beautiful pasture area of Ramtang, 4350m, where the Kanchenjunga glacier starts.
Along the way, we will come across the picturesque Ramtang Monastery, which sits next to a bridge that crosses a waterfall. The views here are truly breathtaking. The trail will then follow the north bank of the river, leading us to the Lhonak Glacier. This junction of the two glaciers is a truly remarkable sight, and we will be rewarded for our efforts with some truly stunning views. Overnight in Lhonak.
As part of our journey today, we will be trekking to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. From Lhonak, we hike for 5-6 hours until we reach Pang Pema, also known as Kanchenjunga northern base camp.
It is a pleasant hike up to the base camp, and we will be climbing steadily throughout. We will be trekking along a line of moraine and there are certain sections of the trail that are prone to landslides, so be sure to be extra careful. The use of a trekking pole may help make things a bit easier.
Eventually, we will reach the flat grassy plain basin of the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Here, you can take in the magnificent beauty of the landscape and gaze at the towering peak of Kanchenjunga. After soaking in the sights, we will return back to Lhonak and spend overnight there.
Today, we will return back from Ghunsa to Lhonak following the same route as before. The trek back is approximately 6-7 hours, which gives us time and opportunity to reflect on all the experiences and memories we’ve had in the last two weeks.
Once we reach Ghunsa we can watch the sunset over the peaks, taking in the stunning sights of the snow-capped mountains as they merge into the night sky. We spent the overnight in Ghunsa.
We’ll move on to Gyable (2 725 m) after a well-rested night in Ghunsa.
This five to six hour trek will take us over some of the most beautiful landscapes of the region.
The trek begins with a steep climb through the forests of Ghunsa, passing stunning alpine meadows and picturesque villages. Take it slow and steady, and appreciate the amazing scenery that the region has to offer.
Once we reach the ridge, the terrain will become slightly easier and we will be able to enjoy the stunning views as we descend into the valley of Gyable. After a long day of trekking, we will settle down in Gyable for a well-deserved overnight rest.
Having spent 16 days enjoying the breathtaking natural beauty of Kanchenjunga region and the incredible hospitality of the locals, we can’t help but feel a little sad as our journey is coming to an end.
Our journey now returns to our starting point – Suketham. We’ve already farewelled Gyable, but we can’t help but feel a bit of nostalgia for a place that’s now only a distant memory.
Today we are heading from Suketham to Sinwa! After weeks of trekking in the Kanchenjunga Region, it’s time to give your legs a break and take in the stunning views from the comfortable ride in a bus.
The drive from Suketham to Sinwa takes approximately 3-4 hours. As you travel along the winding roads of this mountainous terrain, you’ll witness the beauty of the Himalayan Range. From snow-capped mountains to lush green valleys, you’ll be amazed by the diverse landscape of the region.
Once you reach Sinwa, you can relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Spend some time in the local markets to get an authentic taste of the culture and buy some souvenirs to take home. Be sure to try some of the local food as well—it’s sure to be a memorable experience.
At the end of the journey, you can choose to stay overnight at Sinwa or if you want to make the trip shorter, you can drive back to Kathmandu by Bus directly from Suketham.
We are embarking today on a pilgrimage to a holy Hindu temple that is sought out by devotees of all ages, Pathivara Temple. This temple is dedicated to goddess Pathivara and is located at 3750 meters above sea level in the Taplejung district in Nepal’s top east.
The trek is not difficult and can be completed in about five to six hours. After climbing a hilltop and walking through a forest, we will finally reach the Pathivara Temple. After exploring a few hours in the Temple we’ll return back to Phedi to stay overnight.
