Water sources  / Methods of water purification for Everest High Passes Trek

Bottled water: The most convenient way to get water is to buy bottled water available easily at local vendors. It’s advised for you to buy water at lower elevations if you want to save costs, as the price of bottled water spikes with rising elevation. A bottle of water costing Rs. 100 at Lukla might cost Rs. 400+ in Gorakshep.

  • Despite being convenient, it’s advised for travellers to carry their refillable personal water tumblers to avoid plastic waste.

Boiled water: Most tea houses offer boiled water for a mall charge, but getting the boiled water is worth it cause it’s safer from untreated water and since usually the region is visited during cold weather, it’s advised to avoid drinking cold water to avoid the body from losing heat and energy.

Tap or stream water: Water from these sources is readily available to drink but just like suggested before, it needs to be processed through some sort of viable treatment to avoid pathogens.

Filtration process: There are several purification methods that travellers can use for water purification besides the mentioned ones, which can be useful even in times of emergency, particularly for solo adventure travellers to know about them, such as:

Water purification tablets:

  • Lightweight and effective.
  • Safe but slightly chemical taste.

Portable water filters:

  • Mechanical filters (Life Straw, Sawyer Mini)
  • Ideal for stream and tap water.

UV sterilisers (Steripen):

  • Quick and efficient (takes around 90 seconds)
  • Needs batteries and works best with clear water.

 Tips:

  • Always carry a bottle or two with you. Some stretches between villages can be long.
  • Insulated bottles help with cold water at higher altitudes.
  • Purification tablets wait at least 30 minutes before drinking.
  • Many trekkers prefer to stay in tree-houses and purify by themselves, as it is cheaper and sustainable.

Everything you need to Know about Lukla’s flight

Planning your Everest Base Camp trek or Himalayan adventure? Be aware of important Lukla flight operational changes that may impact your Nepal itinerary.

During peak seasons (typically March, April, May, October, and November), all flights to Lukla will now operate from Ramechhap’s Mantali airport. This involves an essential Kathmandu to Ramechhap overland transfer, a scenic yet considerable 5-6 hours drive from Kathmandu. This strategic shift aims to manage air traffic expansion and ensure smoother Everest region access during high demand.

Conversely, in non-peak seasons (January, February, June, July, August, September, and December), direct flights to Lukla will primarily depart from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The specific Lukla will primarily depart from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The specific Lukla flight schedule always depends on the volume of travellers for the month, so flexible travel planning is advisable.

Experience the exhilarating Kathmandu to Lukla flight, a thrilling 25-to-30-minute flight renowned for its dramatic scenery. However, due to Lukla’s unique high-altitude location amidst towering hills, Lukla Airport weather conditions frequently cause delays or cancellations. Trekkers should prepare for potential disruptions and consider contingency plans for their Everest journey. Secure your Lukla flight tickets well in advance, especially for peak season trekking.

While early morning flights to Lukla are the standard, be prepared for potential airport delays that can extend your waiting time significantly. For travel protection and to minimise disruptions to our Everest Base Camp trek itinerary, we highly recommend booking early morning flight slots and incorporating additional reserve days into your Nepal trekking schedule.

Lukla flight delays and cancellations are often caused by a combination of factors including unpredictable Himalayan weather conditions, consistent airport traffic at both Kathmandu and Lukla, runway management issues, and the inherent topographical challenges of this unique mountain airport. Understanding these potential roadblocks is key to effective trip planning.

Therefore, if you are planning an Everest region break, it’s highly advisable to add one or two buffer days to your overall trip durations. These contingency days provide crucial flexibility, safeguarding you against unexpected flight disruptions and ensuring you can comfortably catch your pre-planned international return flight without histories. Prioritising these trekking preparation tips will significantly enhance your Everest adventure.

Ramechhap to Lukla flights during peak season.

Historically, all Lukla flights originated directly from Kathmandu, offering seamless Everest base camp trek departures. Due to recent air traffic expansion at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and a commitment to efficient Himalayan flight management, a significant operational change has been implemented for Lukla airport access.

During the non-peak seasons for the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, especially the trekking season, winter (December, January, February), and Monsoon (June, July, August). Flights to Lukla will continue to operate from Kathmandu. This provides direct and convenient trekking access for those choosing off-peak Nepal adventures.

Conversely, throughout the peak trading season, the popular trekking season Autumn (September, October, and November) and the vibrant trekking season Spring (March, April, and May). All local flights will now depart from Ramechhap’s Manthali airport. This requires an additional Kathmandu to Ramechhap transfer, typically a 5 to 6-hour drive which effectively adds one day to your trekking itinerary. For those seeking a direct morning approach, an early morning private transfer to Ramechhap ( Around 4:00 AM) is a popular alternative for a timely Lukla flight departure. Plan your Everest trek logistics accordingly to ensure a smooth Himalayan journey.

Allow for additional days in case of flight delays to Lukla.

Flight experts said Everest had become increasingly challenging to forecast, leading to numerous look-like flight delays that significantly impact trekking schedules. Incorporating 2 extra days after your Himalayan trek is essential because they provide you with adequate flexibility for any unexpected flight delays or schedule changes that may arise.

These additional days create a crucial buffer period that effectively protects your international flight plans from potential delays primarily caused by climatic conditions in Lukla. These extra days give you invaluable time in case your Lukla flight gets delayed due to bad weather. Alternatively, you can also relax during these days in Kathmandu or enjoy a city tour if your Everest base camp journey progresses smoothly as planned.

Such a flight delay will not necessarily cost additional money for the trick itself, but you might have to stay in Kathmandu longer than initially anticipated. Note that this is a rare occurrence and if you do encounter truly bad weather, our team can proactively change your trekking route or make alternative arrangements to ensure your safety and enjoyment of the Everest Region adventure.
