Mera Peak Climbing Permit

Mera Peak is one of the highest peaks, which takes you to an altitude of 6476 m above sea level. In this peak region, there are three distinct summits: Mera North at the altitude of 6476 m, Mera Central at the altitude of 6461 m, and Mera South at the altitude of 6065 m.

The route of this climb is different from other peak climbs. This trek starts with an exotic flight to Lukla and follows the southeast trail. You pass by the Rhododendron forest below Kalo Himal Ridge, reaching Chutung Village. The next day, your trekking starts at Tuli Kharda by crossing Zatra Wala Pass.

Then, you trek to Hinku Valley with the panoramic view of Mera Peak. You stay in Kothe and trek to Thagnsnak along Dig Glacier to reach Khara. After that, you climb Mera Glacier to reach Mera Base Camp. Finally, you cross another Glacier to reach high camp before the summit day.

On the summit day, you trek early to avoid evening wind storms. This trek leads you to a different route to the final destination, Mera Peak. From the peak, you can enjoy the view of Mt.Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, and many more.

To successfully climb this peak, you will need an NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association) Mera Peak Climbing Permit. A Local Area Permit and a National Park Permit of a certain region are also mandatory, depending on your chosen route. Let’s check out the details of these permits.

NMA Mera Peak Climbing Permit

A Nepal Mountaineering Association Permit is required to reach Mera Peak from any route. This permit must be available before your journey. There are no group discounts for this permit.

It is available only in Kathmandu. Only authorized government-registered local trekking agencies of Nepal can acquire this permit. So, you need to submit the required documents to the travel agency to get this permit.

Cost

The price of this permit depends on the seasons and your Nationality.

  • In spring, it costs USD 250 per person for foreigners and NRP 4000 for Nepalese.
  • In Autumn, it costs USD 125 per person for foreigners and NRP 2000 per person for Nepalese.
  • In Winter and Summer, it costs USD 70 per person for foreigners and NRP 1000 per person for Nepalese.

There are two additional permits required based on the routes you choose.

Route 1

This route takes you through Thangnak from Lukla, then to Khare, and finally to Mera Peak Base Camp. To pass this route, you will need a local area permit called a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit and a Makalu Barun National Park Permit.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit

This peak lies in the Khumbu Region. So, before entering this region, you need a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit. This fund helps to conserve this region.

You can get this permit in Lukla.

Cost

It costs USD 20 per person.

Makalu Barun National Park Permit

This route covers the area of Makalu Barun National Park. So, Makalu Barun National Park Permit is mandatory to enter this preserved area. This fund is utilized for the preservation of Makalu Barun National Park.

This permit is available in the Nepal Tourism Board Office of Kathmandu.

Cost

The cost of this permit depends on your Nationality.

  • If you are from a SAARC country, it costs USD 15 per person.
  • If you are from other foreign countries, it costs USD 30 per person.
  • It is cost-free for local people.

Route 2

This route follows the classic route of Everest Base Camp till you reach Namche Bazaar, then to Mera Base Camp. To pass this route, you will need a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit and a Sagarmatha National Park Permit.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit

This peak lies in the Khumbu Region. So, before entering this region, you need a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit. This fund helps to conserve this region.

You can get this permit in Lukla.

Cost

It costs USD 20 per person.

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

This route covers the area of Sagarmatha National Park. So, a Sagarmatha National Park Permit is necessary to cross this path. This fund helps in the welfare and conservation of Sagarmatha National.

Cost

The price depends on your Nationality.

  • If you are from a SAARC country, it costs USD 15 per person.
  • If you are from other foreign countries, it costs USD 20 per person.
  • It is free for local people.

Documents Required

You must provide the following documents to the travel agency for these permits.

  • A passport with visa validation of at least 6 months is mandatory.
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • Photocopy of Passport
  • Forms filled with documents (done by agency)
  • Travel Insurance
  • NRP because you can only pay in Nepalese currency to get these permits. So, exchange your money before getting permits.
