Everest Base Camp Short Trek – 12 Days vs Even Shorter Everest Base Camp Trek Heli Return – 9 Days

Both of these trips follow the same trail to the same place: up through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche to Lobuche, then on to Everest Base Camp (5,365m) and Kala Patthar. The walking days going up are almost identical. What changes is how you come down.

The Everest Base Camp short trek follows the same route it took: two more days of descent back through Namche to Lukla, then a return flight to Kathmandu, for 12 days total. The Everest Base Camp heli return trek skips that descent entirely. After Kala Patthar, you fly straight out of Gorakshep by helicopter, landing back in Kathmandu the same afternoon, wrapping the whole trip up in 9 days.

What’s identical on both routes

The itinerary to Lobuche is nearly the same trek either way: fly Kathmandu to Lukla, walk to Phakding, climb to Namche Bazaar, acclimatise, continue through Tengboche and Dingboche, and push on to Lobuche before the final approach to Base Camp. Same villages, same monasteries, same Khumbu Icefall view from camp, same climb up Kala Patthar for sunrise over Everest. If you’re choosing between these two purely on “which one sees more,” the honest answer is neither, you see the same mountains either way.

Where they actually differ

The short trek is 12 days and costs from $1,399. It’s rated moderate, with 4-6 hours of walking most days, and takes groups of 1-10. You walk both directions, which means four extra trekking days, but also four more days in the Khumbu: more villages, more chances for the weather to clear, and a gentler pace on the way down that lets your body finish adjusting to the altitude at its own speed.

The heli return trek is 9 days and costs from $2,400. It’s rated easy, with 3-4 hours of walking a day, since you’re only walking one direction and there’s no long descent to grind through. Groups run 1-20. You save 3 days and skip entirely the part of any EBC trek that hardest on the knees, the two-day walk back down from Lobuche to Lukla.

That $1,001 difference buys you three fewer days on the trail, a genuinely spectacular helicopter ride over the Khumbu Glacier and Icefall on the way out, and a trip that fits into a shorter holiday.

Weather risk: worth knowing before you pick

Both trips depend on the Lukla flight, which is weather-dependent in both directions on the short trek. The heli return trek carries one extra point of weather risk: the helicopter pickup from Gorakshep at 5,180m needs a clear window too. It’s a short, reliable hop in good conditions, but Himalayan weather doesn’t always cooperate, and a delay here can push your Kathmandu return by a day. We build buffer days into both itineraries for exactly this reason, and we’ll tell you straight if conditions that week look tight.

Our verdict

Which should you choose?

Choose the short trek if you’d rather walk the whole thing, budget matters, or you like the idea of passing back through Namche and Phakding with the trek behind you, seeing them differently on tired legs than you did on the way up. It’s also the safer bet against weather, since it only needs the Lukla flight to work, not a helicopter link at altitude too.

Choose the heli return if your holiday time is genuinely limited, you want to protect your knees from four days of steep descent, or the idea of flying out past Everest and Lhotse at eye level is worth the extra cost to you on its own. It’s the same summit day either way; you’re really choosing how you want the trip to end.

Our honest take: if this is your first trek in Nepal and you have the time, take the short trek. The walk down is part of the experience, not just the return journey. If you’ve done a teahouse trek before, or you’ve got nine days and not twelve, the heli return earns its price tag.
